Asset Mapping

Aerial Hotshots provides a specialist asset data capture services using geo-tagged video and still to allow managers of all types of assets to gain an accurate spatial representation of assets under their control.

The definition of an ‘asset’ varies but in general includes infrastructure and environmental assets.  We have listed example survey types below.

For ground survey Aerial Hotshots used a Nissan 4wd and a Holden Utility.  Aerial Hotshots is currently exploring ‘aerial’ surveys using the same specialised geo-tagging equipment and a stabilised camera gimble for the aircraft.

Geo-Referenced Ground Survey

Q. What types of surveys can be conducted?

Anything can be surveyed but here are a few examples:

  1. Infrastructure:
    1. Road Network Mapping
    2. Fire Trail Mapping
    3. Four Wheel Drive Track Mapping (4wd)
    4. Pipeline Mapping
    5. Power line Easement Mapping
  1. Environmental
    1. Rivers & Creeks
    2. Natural Disasters
    3. Weed Mapping

Q. What do we mean by ground and aerial surveys?

Ground surveys are generally conducted in either our company Nissan four wheel drive or our Holden Ute with the video equipment mounted on the dashboard. Specilaised equipment is currently being looked at that will mount in our aircraft.

Q. So what do we mean by geo-referenced?

Asset MappingGeo-referencing means we associate the data/imagery that we capture to its 'actual position' on Earth, namely its latitude & longitude, which allows us to use this data to spatially orient the survey location. (i.e. map it)  If we did not geo-reference the data/imagery then it would just be imagery taken of 'somewhere' and cannot be mapped.

Q. What equipment is required?

Aerial HotShots has specialised equipment that geo-references the video and still imagery that we capture. Our pseudo geographical information system (GIS) allows us to import the captured data and provide the client with a spatially orientated digital survey map.

Aerial HotShots uses both SD & HD Video and Digital SLR cameras to record survey data/ imagery of assignments.   The type of assignment indicates whether both video and still images are required

Q.  What is the final product?

The client is provided with the following:

  1. Video and Still Imagery
  2. Geo-referenced Map exported from our GIS Map system
  3. Viewer software – which  allows you to view the map provided
  4. A Survey Report - click here for an example
  5. A Portable Hard drive -contains all the above mentioned files

Q. What can the client do with the geo-reference map provided?

The below map is an actual basic example of a map exported from our GIS system.  This is a basic example of what the client is provided with.

Using the viewer software provided, the client can view the track flown or driven , click anywhere on the map to start & watch video playback, watch a cursor move along the map showing the current location being played , can view any still images taken along the route and cab view images taken of any points of interest.

Look at the Index below that explains each point marked on the map and then watch our demonstration video.

INDEX

  1. Display video tracks on the map that show the path of video collection  (red line)
  2. Click any video track on the map to watch it in the video playback window  (video Image)
  3. Watch a moving cursor trace the video collection path  (black triangle)
  4. Browse still images or captured video frames
  5. Browse recorded points of interests

SURVEY DEMONSTRATION AND EXAMPLES

The below video gives you a basic introduction to our mapping software.

The below video is a basic demonstration of a Highway Survey loaded into our mapping software

The below video is a basic demonstration of Waterway Survey loaded into our mapping software

The below video is a basic demonstration of a A country road survey loaded into our mapping software

Depending on the individual assignment new maps can be added to our database to meet client background map needs.  Ultimately, the union of time, date and location with audiovisual content is a powerful tool which when used correctly results in expediting informed decision making

VIDEO EXAMPLES

Here are some short video clips showing just the video side of the asset mapping.

Asset Mapping - Highway

Asset Mapping - Country Rd

Asset Mapping - Waterway Erosion

Asset Mapping - Waterways (Mangroves)

Asset Mapping - Waterway Pollusion Monitoring

What about 'Vertical' Video for asset mapping such as a highway...

Using our vertical camera mount in the aircraft we captured the below video of a Highway and its immediate surrounds from 1000ft AGL.

Geo-Tagged High Resolution Still Imagery

Using Nikon Digital SLR cameras and geo-tagging technology each time a still image is taken the current GPS location is embedded into the metadata of each image.

The client then has two service choices.

  1. We provide the client the still geo-tagged images on a CD and the client uses them as they see fit, or
  2. These images are loaded into our GIS system and using the viewer GIS software provided, the client can view where the images were taken.

Example:  If we drove along a pipeline under construction, in our four wheel drive vehicle, and took a series of images along the route then these images would appear as Points of Interest (POI) along the map.  The client can select and POI and view that image.
